The History of Hilliard

Hilliard got its start in 1852 when it was called “Hilliard’s Station, when settler John Reed Hilliard bought the 10 acres of land where it now stands. It was crossed by the Pigua and Indiana Railroad and a train station was established. Hilliard’s Station created a convenient shipping point for local farmers, where they could send their products to market and easily pick up supplies. For nearly 100 years, the station and the adjacent Main Street served as the town center.

When the town welcomed a post office in 1854, the name was shortened to Hilliard. It was incorporated in 1869, remaining a farming community for many decades. In the 1950s, three large residential neighborhoods were constructed in Hilliard, which fueled major growth. People looking for a comfortable suburban lifestyle arrived in droves, and the population jumped from about 600 in 1950 to more than 5,600 in 1960. In 1960, Hilliard was officially incorporated as a city.
