About Antioch

Antioch is an affordable city situated along east San Francisco Bay and the San Joaquin River in Contra Costa County. The History of Antioch

One of the oldest cities in the state, Antioch was founded in 1850 during the California Gold Rush. The site proved to have many valuable resources, as coal was discovered in the hills south of Antioch in 1859 and copper deposits were found in 1863. In 1889, Antioch's first paper mill was established by M. D. Keeney, and the paper industry has continued to be one of the biggest employers in the city. As the city grew, it gained its own newspaper, post office and official city incorporation.
