About Hilliard

The suburban city of Hilliard is a growing community outside of Columbus, located in central Ohio. A large percentage of the Hilliard population is made up of young families drawn to the friendly atmosphere and convenient amenities. Unique landmarks and attractions in Hilliard include the Early Television Museum, the Heritage Rail Trail and the World Trade Center flag that flies in front of the local firehouse.

The History of Hilliard

Hilliard got its start in 1852 when it was called “Hilliard’s Station, when settler John Reed Hilliard bought the 10 acres of land where it now stands. It was crossed by the Pigua and Indiana Railroad and a train station was established. Hilliard’s Station created a convenient shipping point for local farmers, where they could send their products to market and easily pick up supplies. For nearly 100 years, the station and the adjacent Main Street served as the town center.

When the town welcomed a post office in 1854, the name was shortened to Hilliard. It was incorporated in 1869, remaining a farming community for many decades. In the 1950s, three large residential neighborhoods were constructed in Hilliard, which fueled major growth. People looking for a comfortable suburban lifestyle arrived in droves, and the population jumped from about 600 in 1950 to more than 5,600 in 1960. In 1960, Hilliard was officially incorporated as a city.

Living in Hilliard

One of the highlights of living in Hilliard is its year-round schedule of community events. These events provide the ideal setting for getting to know others in your community and enjoying a range of activities.

The Old Hilliardfest Art & Street Fair is among the most popular annual events, put on every September by the Hilliard Civic Association. This downtown event features numerous art performers, including both professionals and locals. A modern and classic car show, food trucks, carnival rides, face painting and kids’ crafts are just a few of the highlights of the large event.

The Fourth of July Parade is another local favorite, paired with a fireworks display overlooking the community park. Hilliard has also been host to the Franklin County Fair since 1917, a summer event that draws both residents and out-of-town visitors.

Hilliard Schools

Hilliard City Schools is responsible for the public elementary, middle and high schools throughout the community. There are a few private schools in Hilliard as well, most of which are preschools.
