About Burlington

Burlington is a small city in western New Jersey, a tight-knit community that offers a small-town lifestyle in a location that has played an important role in American history. It's known as the birthplace of major retailer Burlington Coat Factory, and as host to a thriving historical district that offers shopping, dining and more. Although the population is fairly small, thousands of people flood the downtown district every weekday thanks to the concentration of businesses and industrial neighborhoods in the area.

The History of Burlington

Burlington traces its history back hundreds of years to early Native Americans and Quakers. The first Dutch settlers arrived in 1666. The city became Burlington Township one year later and provided a safe home for Quakers fleeing persecution in England.

During its early years, Burlington was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the town counted several abolitionists among its citizens. Of the many famous figures who either lived in or visited Burlington, Blackbeard might be the most interesting. According to legend, the infamous pirate buried his treasure somewhere in town.

The oldest home in the United States, Revell House, is in Burlington. Additionally, 39 other historical buildings are found within its boundaries.

Living in Burlington

Burlington has several attractive factors that draw new residents, including a high graduation rate, a stable housing market and convenient amenities. It's also popular for its sunny, warm weather, which provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Also, because there's no sales tax on apparel or shoes, Burlington has become a popular shopping destination.

Burlington is one of the more affordable places to live in New Jersey. You'll pay far less for a home, for example, and health care is less expensive than the state averages. The town also offers numerous amenities, from supermarkets to fitness centers, so you don't have to go beyond the town limits to tackle everyday tasks. Youth sports, a local library, parks, and community events provide plenty of recreational and entertainment options in Burlington as well.

Burlington Schools

The Schools of Burlington Township School District include four separate institutions; a high school, a middle school and two elementary schools that serve students between pre-kindergarten and fifth grade.
