The History of Dundalk

Dundalk's roots lie in several industries that came to the area at the tail end of the 19th century, including a bell foundry, a railroad depot and a steel company. Henry McShane, an Irish immigrant who arrived in 1856, was the bell foundry's owner. When the railroad arrived in the area, he chose the name Dundalk, in honor of his hometown in Ireland.

The community was officially founded in 1917 and at the time contained just 62 homes, a handful of stores and a post office, in addition to its industrial sector. When World War I created a significant increase in the demand for steel, Dundalk's steel company flourished. This drew new people to the town, thanks to a surplus of jobs and plenty of available homes.
