The History of Country Club Hills

Country Club Hills started as a dream for J. E. Merrion, a local developer. In 1955, he decided he wanted to create a town full of affordable middle-income homes for working families, set in a relaxed, country-style environment.

Before this time, German farmers who came to the land in the 1800s had settled the area. The area was known as Cooper Grove for quite some time, and the farmers established a local church and school. The church was opened in 1873, and the building still stands in the Country Club Hills of today.

Once Merrion discovered the picturesque setting of the then-named Cooper Grove, he saw great potential for his ideas to come to life. The spacious lots, well-designed homes and convenient roadways attracted many new residents. By 1956, Country Club Hills had approximately 117 homes completed, and the Country Club Hills Homeowners Association started working toward incorporation. The town was incorporated in 1958.
