About Mason

Mason is a bustling city in southwestern Ohio, located less than 25 miles from the major city of Cincinnati. It’s included in a region referred to as “Ohio’s Largest Playground,” a nickname used for the surrounding Warren County, which hosts a number of amusement and water parks. Mason experienced rapid growth In the second half of the 20th century and continues to welcome large numbers of new residents today.

The History of Mason

The land where Mason is now located was purchased by Revolutionary War veteran William Mason in 1803. He paid just $1,700 at a local auction for the 640 acres where the present-day downtown now stands, platting 16 individual lots and choosing the name Palmira. After his death, 40 additional lots on the west, north and south sides of his development were platted.

Upon recording, the name was misspelled as Palmyra, and it was discovered that another Ohio town had claimed that name. In honor of its founder, the town’s name was changed to Mason.

Within Mason’s 18 square miles, you’ll find more than 500 different businesses in a number of different industries. The local economy is particularly highlighted by light industry, high-tech companies and corporate headquarters, attracting many companies to more than 20 different commerce parks. Close to 100 different corporations either are headquartered or maintain major operations facilities in Mason, including Procter & Gamble, Cintas, Luxottica Retail, Heinze and Mitsubishi Electric.

Another part of the Mason economy relies on the entertainment and hospitality sectors. The city is home to Kings Island amusement and water park, The beach water park and the Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park, all of which supply both visitors and jobs to the area. The Lindner Family Tennis Center is another important presence, hosting numerous professional tennis tournaments. The visitors who arrive to take advantage of local attractions not only create jobs at the amusement parks and tennis center, but also help fuel the growth of local retail shops, hotels and restaurants.

Mason Schools

Mason City Schools is responsible for the public schools throughout the city and is consistently recognized as one of the top districts in the state. Sinclair Community College has a campus in Mason, offering a variety of certificate and degree programs.
