About Fairfield

Fairfield is a small but welcoming community with 5 miles of shoreline in the Long Island Sound. This Connecticut town has earned several awards for its residents' high quality of life, including being named as the best place to live in the entire northeastern United States. It has all the charming feel of a small-town suburb while still maintaining convenient proximity to the larger city of Bridgeport.

The History of Fairfield

Fairfield has a long history that stretches back to the 17th century, when Puritans and Congregationalists settled in Connecticut in search of religious freedom. The town saw one of its greatest hardships during the Revolutionary War. It supported independence from the British and, as a result, British troops burned the town to ashes. After that, Fairfield focused its attention on rebuilding efforts, constructing a number of new homes and businesses to replace what had been lost.

World War I spurred further economic development in the area, due largely to the economic boom in nearby Bridgeport. Thanks to the development of a thriving munitions industry, Bridgeport soon found itself in a major housing shortage. New residents to the area decided Fairfield was the next best place to call home, and the largely agrarian community of Fairfield became home to many affluent residents. The town continued to grow and evolve, even during the Great Depression.

Jobs in Fairfield

Many people flock to Fairfield for its diverse economy, which provides jobs in a variety of fields. If you're looking for a job in the corporate world, Fairfield is reasonably close to New York City. There are also employment opportunities within Fairfield itself. General Electric Co., Bigelow Tea and a few other major companies operate in the town.

Fairfield boasts a relatively low unemployment rate and promising job growth, and the town has a good economic climate compared to other New England cities.

The Fairfield Public School District is responsible for the public schools within city limits. There are just a few private schools in Fairfield, but you have the option of a secular or faith-based campus.
