About Huntington Station

Located near the northern shore of Long Island, Huntington Station is a census-designated community in Suffolk County about 38 miles east of New York City. Around 35,000 people reside in the hamlet, whose borders lie within the Town of Huntington. Originally called Fairground, it was renamed Huntington Station in honor of the Long Island Rail Road station opened in 1868.

The bustling train stop with parking is on the Fort Jefferson line, connecting to New York City and places east with both electrified and diesel-powered trains.

The area’s first residents were the Matinecock Indians. Today, great public schools, recreational activities, and transportation options make Huntington Station a coveted place to call home for young professionals, families, and retirees.

As a transportation hub, the hamlet has seen new mixed-use buildings constructed within walking distance of the station with apartments on the upper floors.

Expect more downtown revitalization on the way. Huntington Station’s convenient location provides easy access to beaches, the sound, plus the vibrant culture of nearby New York City. Things to Do in Huntington Station

Huntington Station is the birthplace of revered poet Walt Whitman, whose life is celebrated at Walt Whitman Birthplace Historic Site. All ages play sports at Manor Field Park or take the challenge of its Sensory Scavenger Hunt among the park’s variety of trees. Just outside Huntington Station is the Heckscher Museum of Art in the Town of Huntington’s Heckscher Park, which includes a fine permanent collection.

John Coltrane Day MusicFest is an annual event also in Heckscher Park put on by the Coltrane Home, which is a museum, archive, and music-education organization devoted to the jazz legend. With a nickname like The Little Apple, you know there’s plenty more cultural delights in Huntington Village, in addition to boutique shopping and dining.

Day trips to Cold Spring Harbor State Park on Long Island Sound or the beach at Robert Moses State Park on the Atlantic Ocean to the south are just a couple options for enjoying Long Island’s surrounding waters.

Huntington Station Transportation

In addition to the train stop for which it was named, Suffolk County Transit has bus lines providing service along New York Avenue/Route 110. Town of Huntington also operates Huntington Area Rapid Transit buses to the area. Long Island Expressway/I-495 and Northern State Parkway are nearby for car travel.
