A cozy Atlanta suburb, Riverdale is the second-largest city in Clayton County, but a fairly small town when compared to many other cities in Georgia. It's just 15 miles south of Atlanta and a few minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, making it a convenient home base. The History of Riverdale

Riverdale was first settled in the early 19th century, and the arrival of the railroad greatly contributed to its growth in the late 19th century. The local farmers made a deal with the railroad that helped the small community's economy grow and flourish: in exchange for providing wood for the railroad to use in construction, the farmers would be given rich fertilizer to feed their crops.

After building a depot, worker housing and more tracks in the center of the city, Riverdale became a major railway station before its incorporation in 1908. It was named Riverdale for W.S. Rivers, a local who played a major role in the town's growth by donating his family's land to the railroad, in order to allow its construction.
