Casselberry is a mid-size city in southern Seminole County, Florida, only about 10 miles north of Orlando's downtown district. This family-friendly community is a designated Tree City USA, honored for its commitment to preserving a healthy community of trees in its urban setting. It's relatively small geographically at just under 8 square miles, but nevertheless provides plenty of amenities and recreational opportunities.

The History of Casselberry

Archaeological evidence around Casselberry leads historians to believe that the Native American tribe known as the St. Johns people was the first to live in the area, between 800 and 1565 A.D. In 1849, the first European settlers arrived in the area and built Fort Concord on the shores of Lake Concord. From the 1850s to the 1880s, land around Casselberry continued to be purchased by homesteaders.

In 1925, Gordon J. Barnett moved to Altamonte Springs and built his own fernery and housing development called Fern Park Estates. Soon his fernery became one of the world's largest producers of Asparagus plumosus ferns. Then, in 1926, when Hibbard Casselberry was visiting his wife's family in Winter Park, he met Barnett and signed on as a sales agent for Fern Park Estates. Even though Barnett and Casselberry parted ways soon after, Casselberry stayed in the area and started his own subdivision: Winter Park Ferneries. The area later became known as Fern Park.

As the area continued to grow, Hibbard Casselberry convinced residents that they needed to incorporate their own tax-free town to avoid property taxes. On Oct. 10, 1940, a town meeting was held and the tax-free town of Casselberry was officially incorporated.
