About Linden

Linden is a charming city in Genesee County located 18 miles south of Flint and 40 miles north of Ann Arbor. Around 4,000 people reside in Linden, where the scenic Shiawassee River flows right through the heart of town.

Established in 1871, Linden preserves its history while embracing life in the 21st century, as reflected in its motto: Where Yesterday Meets Today. The Linden Mill building dates to before the Civil War, and through citizen efforts throughout the years, now houses the library, historic archives, and city council chambers.

Right behind the Mill is Mill Pond Park’s gazebo, amphitheater, and grassy beaches, where the family-friendly community spanning many generations of lifelong residents gathers.

Living and Working in Linden

Linden’s historic downtown is full of thriving small businesses from cafes and barbershops to day spas, antique shops, and bakeries, all promoting a strong community spirit. Housing prices are well below the national average and more than 90 percent of residents own their own homes.

Most abodes near the center of town were built prior to 1940, with newer developments farther out. Historically, the river has been key to local industry, starting with timber, then barrel and buggy building, and cement production in the 20th century.

Today, job opportunities have been rising in business and financial operations, healthcare and technology, education, management, administration, and manufacturing. The average commute time is about 30 minutes.
