About Fishers

Fishers is a large and rapidly growing city in Indiana's Hamilton County. The city's strong and nationally-recognized school system, numerous recreational opportunities, and friendly community events have made it a highly desirable place to live.

The History of Fishers

Fishers has gone through several name changes over the years, including Fishers Station and Fishers Switch. The land was originally owned by Salathiel Fisher, but in 1872 he decided to divide his land into lots for a town. The railroad that went through the town helped bring in new residents and businesses, spurring growth and expansion.

By 1960, just 388 people lived here, but the city's population grew rapidly over the second half of the 20th century. The relocation of the highway and a new connection with I-69 helped ensure the continued growth of Fishers. On Jan. 1, 2015, Fishers officially transitioned from a town to a city.
