How to Store a Rug

Rugs add warmth and character to any space, but when it’s time to store them, they need extra care. The best way to store rugs is to clean them, roll (not fold) them, wrap them in breathable material, and keep them in a cool, dry place. Done right, your rug will come out of storage looking as good as the day it went in.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to storing rugs the right way.

Clean Thoroughly First

Before you pack a rug away, always clean it. Dust, dirt, or food crumbs left behind can attract pests or cause odors. Vacuum both sides thoroughly, and if needed, have the rug professionally cleaned—especially if it’s wool or heavily used. Allow it to dry completely before storage, since even small amounts of moisture can lead to mold or mildew.

Roll, Don’t Fold

Folding creates permanent creases that are difficult to remove later. Instead, roll your rug tightly with the pile facing inward. Rolling helps protect the fibers and prevents damage to the rug’s design. If your rug is especially large, you may need an extra set of hands to keep it even while rolling.

Wrap for Protection

Once rolled, cover your rug in a breathable material such as cotton or muslin. Avoid sealing it in plastic long-term, since plastic can trap moisture. For extra protection during storage, you can add an additional outer layer of kraft paper or a lightweight rug storage bag.

Store Rugs Off the Ground

In a storage unit, keep your rug elevated on shelving or pallets. This prevents contact with dust or potential moisture on the floor. Storing rugs horizontally (lying flat) is best, but vertical storage against a wall can also work, so long as you rotate it occasionally to avoid flattening one side.

Control the Climate

Rugs, especially those made of wool or natural fibers, are sensitive to temperature and humidity. A climate-controlled storage unit helps maintain consistent conditions and reduces the risk of mold, mildew, or fiber damage.

Add Pest Protection

Cedar blocks or lavender sachets can help deter moths and other insects. Avoid mothballs, as their odor can linger and transfer to the rug. Place sachets near, but not directly on, the rug for the best results.

Label and Track

If you’re storing multiple rugs, label each roll by size, color, or room so you know exactly what you’re pulling out later. Keeping a simple inventory list also helps you track what’s in storage.
