Public Storage Recognized as Self Storage Sustainability Leader

Nov 21, 2023 / Public Storage

Public Storage was recently recognized with the 2023 Leader in the Light Award from the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (Nareit).  The prestigious Leader in the Light Award honors companies that demonstrate outstanding sustainability practices.

Public Storage was among 10 out of approximately 215 Nareit members to receive the award in 2023. As a sustainability leader, Public Storage implements responsible programs to promote long-term resilience, growth, and value creation.

A panel of expert judges selects the recipients based on comprehensive reviews that include overall sustainability practice, scoring on the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Survey, and specific Leader in the Light Award considerations.

“We are excited to highlight our members that are focusing on advancing sustainability practices in their buildings and surrounding communities, and that are raising the bar for transparency and embedding good governance within their management and operations,” said Nareit Senior Vice President of Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability Jessica Long in a statement.

In October, GRESB—one of the world’s leading ESG benchmarks and reporting frameworks—recognized Public Storage as the U.S. self-storage sustainability leader in its 2023 survey.  We rank highest amongst our peer group, named a best-performing Regional Sector Leader, and awarded an “A” rating for public sustainability disclosure.

  • Partnering with BREEAM® on a self-storage green building certification program in the U.S., becoming the nation’s leading owner of green-certified facilities and creating a path for adoption by the broader industry;
  • Equipping over 350 properties with solar power capability, with plans to reach over 1,000 properties by 2025;
  • Reducing like-for-like carbon emissions intensity by 29% over the past four years;
  • Earning the prestigious Great Place to Work Certification™, an award based entirely on what current employees say about their experience working at Public Storage;
  • Launching our Community Connects community giving initiative and the Preparing the Path leadership accelerator program;
  • Earning the “Top 10%” recognition from Comparably Diversity & Gender Scores compared to similar-sized companies; and
  • Leading the U.S. self-storage REIT peer group across the primary sustainability benchmarks.

We will continue to expand our efforts to be at the forefront of sustainability.
