Located on the southern shore of Long Island, Lindenhurst is an incorporated village in Suffolk County about 43 miles east of New York City. Around 27,000 people reside in Lindenhurst, which lies within the Town of Babylon. Lindenhurst’s train station is on the Babylon Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, with service to New York City westbound and Babylon to the east.

Founded as Breslau in 1873, the village and train station were renamed in 1891 after the abundance of local linden trees. The area’s first residents were Secatogue and Massapequa Native Americans. Today, great public schools, the LIRR train stop, and coastal waters make Lindenhurst a wonderful place to call home for young professionals, families, and retirees.

All ages play at Lindenhurst Village Park and Feller’s Pond, named for Feller Brewery established in 1893. Residents can get yearly passes to Overlook Beach on the Atlantic Ocean and Venetian Shores on the Great South Bay through the Town of Babylon. The Lindenhurst Village Marina is open from April to December, with docks available by lottery. Crabbing and fishing are very popular, just make sure to obtain licenses. History buffs enjoy the two museums in Irmisch Park: the 1901 Restored Railroad Depot and Freight as well as the Old Village Hall Museum.

The Rainbow Senior Center offers cultural and exercise classes, plus field trips. The village has organized youth recreation, a youth center, and a summer camp so popular a lottery is required to get in. For a beach getaway, take the Robert Moses Causeway over the Great South Bay Bridge to Robert Moses State Park, Gilgo Beach, or many others along the Atlantic Shore.

In addition to the LIRR Lindenhurst stop, Montauk Highway, Sunrise Highway, Southern Parkway, and Long Island Expressway/I-495 are nearby for car travel.

Lindenhurst Schools

The first schoolhouse opened in 1876 and a slew of new schools were built to accommodate the post-World War II suburban population boom. Today the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, home of the Bulldogs, serves the Village as well as North Lindenhurst students.
