Packing and Moving Hacks

There are hacks for just about anything, including moving and storing. So Frank from Public Storage is here to teach you how to hack your move, with these awesome moving and packing tips and tricks.

Step 1 - Don't Cut the Plastic Tab That Connects the Box Flaps

Most people think that this tab is just a manufacturing need and cut it immediately. However, it's actually very intentional and very useful. First off, it's called a Nuna Tab. These tabs are meant to keep the box top flaps out of the way while you pack your items, so don't cut them until you're done. Sorry folks, if you're reusing older boxes, the nuna tabs will already be cut.

Step 2 - Color Code Your Boxes

Create a color code system for your box labels. This may seem a tad extensive, but by assigning a different color to each room of your home or office, it'll be a whole lot easier to place your items in the right room when you arrive at your destination.

Step 3 - Cut Handholds In the Box

Use scissors to cut handholds on opposite sides of the box. Be sure to cut them low enough so the pressure from the box's weight doesn't tear the top of the box. Also, be mindful of what's inside. If you're packing something that can easily be damaged, cut the handholds before loading the box's content.

Step 4 - Keep the Door From Latching with a Rubber Band

Tired of awkwardly trying to twist door knobs while your hands are full? There's a way to keep the door unlocked while you carry items in and out of your home. Simply twist a rubber band into a figure eight and hook the loops around the door handles. Make sure the part where the rubber band crosses itself is located over the latch of the door. This will prevent the door from latching shut while you move through the doorway.

Step 5 - Pack a Bag with Everything You'll Need On the First Day

During the process of packing and moving, it's easy to forget that you'll need certain things immediately at your destination. Pack a separate bag to hold all of the items that you'll need on the first day. This way, you don't have to dig through packed boxes to find your toothbrush or deodorant.
