About Martinez

Martinez is a midsize community in the eastern region of Georgia, located near the Georgia-South Carolina border. It’s considered part of the Augusta metropolitan area, serving as one of the city’s northwestern suburbs. At less than 7 miles from Augusta, the community is a convenient home base for commuters who want a quiet, suburban lifestyle.

The History of Martinez

The founder and namesake of Martinez was Jose Martinez y Saldivar, a Cuban man who arrived in the area as a conquistador. He purchased a plantation in the area, naming it El Cordero Rancho (“The Lamb Ranch”), and became a fairly successful landowner. His four daughters went on to marry high-ranking businessmen and professionals in the community and continued to be prominent members of society. Today, Martinez’s original home still stands, as do his barns and a small water tower.
