How to Organize a Nursery When You Have a Baby on the Way
Mar 11, 2026 / Public Storage

Preparing a nursery is one of the most exciting parts of expecting a baby. But with the gear, the clothes, and all those tiny essentials, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news? With a little planning and some smart organization, you can create a functional, calming space that works for both you and your little one on the way.
Start with the Essentials
Before you dive into decorating, focus on the must-haves: a crib, a comfortable chair for feeding, a changing station, and adequate storage. These are the items you’ll use daily, so position them thoughtfully. Place the changing table within arm’s reach of diaper supplies and keep the nursing chair near a small side table for water, burp cloths, and your phone.
Zone Your Space
Think of your nursery in zones: sleeping, changing, feeding, and storage. This approach helps you stay organized and makes nighttime routines smoother. The sleeping zone should be calm and clutter-free. The changing zone needs quick access to things like diapers, wipes, and creams. Your feeding area benefits from soft lighting, comfortable seating, and essential items within reach.
Maximize Vertical Storage
Nurseries can be small, so use your walls. Install floating shelves for books and decor, hang organizers on the back of the door, and use wall-mounted baskets for toys or blankets. This will keep the floor clear and can make the room feel more spacious.
Contain the Chaos
Babies come with a lot of stuff. Try to use bins, baskets, and drawer dividers to keep everything sorted. Label containers by category—newborn clothes, 3-6-month clothes, burp cloths, swaddles, toys—so you (and helpful visitors) can find things quickly. Clear bins work great because you can easily see what’s inside and grab what you need.
Organize Clothes by Size
Sorting clothing by size rather than type can be helpful since babies grow quickly. Keep only the current and next size accessible in the dresser or closet. Store larger sizes in labeled bins on a high shelf or in a closet elsewhere. This prevents drawer overload and makes morning dressing much easier.
Create a Nighttime Station
Set up a small caddy or cart with nighttime essentials: diapers, wipes, diaper cream, a change of clothes, pacifiers, and a small flashlight or nightlight. Keep it next to the changing table or crib so you’re not fumbling in the dark during 2 a.m. changes.
Keep It Simple
You don’t need every gadget on the market. Start with the basics and add items as you discover what you actually need. An overstuffed nursery can feel stressful rather than soothing.
A well-organized nursery isn’t about perfection; it’s about function and peace of mind. When everything has a place, you’ll spend less time searching and more time enjoying those precious early moments.
