Public Storage recently opened hundreds more climate controlled storage units in Colorado Springs, all in a sleek new location that represents the company’s larger investment in the area.

Public Storage 3601 Blue Horizon View, Colorado Springs, CO 80908 is the company’s 14th storage facility in the growing town, ranked among the most desirable places to live in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

It is visible from Powers Boulevard, aka Highway 21, in an area of newly constructed homes and local shopping centers in north Colorado Springs. The property is conveniently near Peterson Air Force Base and the Colorado Springs Airport and offers a combination of indoor and drive-up outdoor units on site.

The facility sports accents that mimic the look of classic wood siding, in muted grey and tan tones in keeping with the styling of new homes in the area. But it also manages to flash a healthy dose of Public Storage Orange.

“It’s a brand new climate controlled property in an area that’s under-served for self storage,”; said Erik Svensson, a vice president on the company’s real estate team.

Public Storage opened another location in town the previous month, marking the first time it expanded in “The Springs”; in 19 years. The locations serve the town of under a half million that is attracting businesses and new residents, many who need some extra space.

The other new location, Public Storage 6190 Tutt Blvd., Colorado Springs CO 80923 has 1,213 indoor, climate controlled units.

“Ten years ago, there was nothing there,”; said area manager Samantha Varnadore of the neighborhood where the new Public Storage is located. In fact you can see another vacant lot across the street in the photo above.

Millennials are among the town’s new residents. In fact, Colorado Springs is the most popular city in the country for that age group. More moved here than any other city in the U.S. during the five year period that ended in 2015, according to a report from the nonprofit public policy group Brookings Institution. Affordability and quality of life, including a low unemployment rate, surely help make this town a draw.

Colorado Springs is the state’s second largest city and is much more affordable than Denver. That neighbor to the north has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, with housing and business costs rising with the population growth. Colorado Springs, in contrast, offers a current median home value that is 30 percent less, at $293,000, according to Zillow. And according to Varnadore, people are willing to commute to Denver, over an hour away.

Now local shopping centers, single-family homes and apartments are growing out of empty fields in what is turning into the premium area of town. People move to the area for jobs, including at one of three military bases in town, North American Aerospace Defense Command, or to attend Air Force Academy, and they stay for the quality of life, she said.

“There’s a lot of really beautiful scenery. Outdoors, it’s gorgeous,”; said Varnadore, referring to Pike’s Peak and the aptly named Garden of the Gods, among other jaw-dropping sites.

There is also an array of new restaurants in town, from Hops n Drops to the Skirted Heifer, and more. And to compliment the traditional churches and military bases, tech companies are also moving in, including BombBomb, a video email service, Titan Robotics, which makes custom 3D printers, and Altair, that makes computer systems and interfaces in many cars on the road today. Other private employers include Lockheed Martin, Oracle, T. Rowe Price Associates and Progressive Insurance.

Colorado Springs has a healthier job market than similarly sized metro areas, as well as a lower unemployment rate than the national average, according to U.S. News and World Report.

In all, it’s the perfect place for a new self-storage facility.

“This is a really good addition to the property mix that we have out there,”; said Varnadore.
