Where to Store Your Motorcycle: Indoor vs. Outdoor Options
Oct 2, 2025 / Public Storage
When it comes to storing a motorcycle, you have options. Store a motorcycle in a small indoor unit (often a 5×10) for more protection, or in an outdoor parking space at select locations for lower cost. Just make sure to prep the bike first for smoother starts later.
Indoor Motorcycle Storage
A 5×10 unit typically fits a single bike plus helmets, jackets, and a tool tote. Benefits include shelter from rain and sun, privacy, and room to stash accessories. Climate-controlled indoor units can help reduce temperature swings.
Outdoor Motorcycle Storage
Uncovered parking spaces are available at select facilities. They’re usually the most budget-friendly and offer drive-right-up convenience. Because they’re exposed to the elements, many riders use a fitted, breathable cover to help shield from sun and rain.
Pre-Storage Checklist
- Clean and dry: Wash off road grime to reduce corrosion.
- Fluids: Top off oil and coolant. If storing for months, fill the tank and add a fuel stabilizer, then run the bike briefly outdoors and not within the space you’re storing it.
- Battery: For longer storage, disconnect to reduce drain. Loose or spare batteries cannot be stored separately inside the unit.
- Tires: Inflate to recommended PSI; use a paddock stand or move the bike occasionally to avoid flat spots.
- Cover: Use a breathable motorcycle cover—even indoors—to keep dust off.
Access and Routine
Position the bike so it’s easy to roll in and out without shifting boxes. Keep the cover, stand, and a small toolkit within reach. If the bike will sit for months, crank it briefly (outdoors and not where you’re storing it) or roll it to circulate fluids.
Choose indoor for added shelter and accessory storage; choose outdoor for affordability and quick access. Prep well and you’ll be ready for the next ride.
