Storing Seasonal Decor Beyond the Holidays

Oct 2, 2025 / Public Storage

Holiday decorations aren’t the only items that rotate in and out of your home. From spring wreaths to birthday banners, seasonal decor can quickly pile up and take over closets or garages. Instead of cramming everything into one overflowing box, a storage unit can help keep your goods organized, protected, and easy to grab when the next celebration rolls around. With the right approach, you can keep your home clutter-free and your decorations in great shape year after year.

Sort by Occasion

Start by separating your decor into clear categories. Common groups include spring and summer decor, fall accents, birthday party supplies, and decorations for special events like anniversaries or baby showers. When each occasion has its own bin, you won’t have to sift through unrelated items to find what you need.

Label Clearly

Once items are sorted, add labels to each bin or box. Use large, easy-to-read labels with simple titles such as “fall decorations” or “birthday supplies.” For an extra layer of organization, consider using color-coded bins — orange for autumn, green for spring, or blue for birthdays. These visual cues make it simple to spot the right container in your storage unit.

Protect Fragile Pieces

Not all seasonal decor is unbreakable. If you’re storing items like glass vases, candle holders, or ceramic figurines, wrap them in packing paper or bubble wrap before placing them in a box. Put heavier items on the bottom of the container and stack lighter pieces on top. This keeps everything safe and prevents accidental breakage when moving boxes in and out of your unit. Just be sure these are everyday decor pieces, not valuables or collectibles.

Store Together

Dedicate one shelf, corner, or section of your storage unit to seasonal decor. Keeping everything grouped together means you’ll always know where it is, and you won’t accidentally lose a box among other household items. If you have larger pieces, such as artificial wreaths or yard decorations, hang them on hooks or place them in oversized bins to keep them from being crushed.

Add Accessories

Don’t forget to include the accessories that go with your decorations. Hooks, extension cords, string lights, and tablecloths are easy to store alongside your seasonal items so you’re not scrambling to find them later. Again, keep it simple: no valuables, heirlooms, or items with significant monetary value should ever be included.

The Bottom Line

Seasonal decor brings color and fun to your home throughout the year, but it doesn’t have to create clutter in between celebrations. By sorting, labeling, protecting, and storing your decorations properly, you can keep everything organized and ready for the next big event — without taking up space at home.

(Important: Remember that Public Storage rental agreements prohibit storing property with a total value over $5,000 per unit. Valuable items — antiques, heirlooms, or high-end décor — should never be placed in a storage unit.)
