Storing Kitchenware: Pots, Pans, and Small Appliances

Sep 25, 2025 / Public Storage

Kitchenware takes up a lot of space. And from heavy cast-iron skillets to blenders and coffee makers, these items need a little extra care to stay in good condition while stored. The good news? With the right prep and organization, storing pots, pans, and small appliances in a storage unit is easier than you think.

How do you pack and store your kitchen gear so it’s ready to use again when you need it?

Clean Everything Before You Store

Step one is non-negotiable: wash and dry all pots, pans, and appliances thoroughly. Leftover crumbs, grease, or moisture can lead to stains, odors, or even mold in storage. For appliances like coffee makers or toasters, wipe down all surfaces and empty any water reservoirs before packing them away.

Protect Pots and Pans

Stacking pots and pans saves space, but it can also cause scratches. To prevent damage, place a layer of paper, bubble wrap, or even kitchen towels between each item. Glass lids should be wrapped individually and packed upright in a sturdy box. Cast iron cookware deserves special attention, coat lightly with cooking oil, wipe it down, then wrap in paper or cloth to help prevent rust.

Store Small Appliances the Right Way

Appliances like blenders, mixers, and slow cookers have delicate parts that can break if packed incorrectly. Follow these tips:

  • Carefully Disassemble parts like blades, beaters, or trays and wrap separately.
  • Use original boxes if available, since they’re designed to fit snugly.
  • Label boxes clearly so you can find specific appliances quickly when you return.
  • Remove loose batteries from handheld gadgets like milk frothers. (Remember: spare or loose batteries cannot be stored in your unit.)

Choose the Right Containers

Sturdy plastic bins with tight lids are ideal for kitchenware. They help protect against dust and stack easily in your unit. Cardboard boxes can work short-term but may weaken under the weight of heavy items like pots and pans.

Organize by Use

Keep similar items together to make unpacking simple. For example:

  • One bin for baking supplies (mixers, measuring cups, rolling pins)
  • One bin for cooking essentials (pans, spatulas, skillets)
  • One bin for small appliances (toaster, blender, rice cooker)

Label each bin clearly and store the heaviest ones on the bottom of your stack.

Consider Climate Control

If you’re storing for more than a few months, a climate-controlled storage unit can help protect small appliances with electronic parts. It also helps reduce humidity, which can cause rust on metal cookware.

A Fresh Start for Your Kitchen

Storing kitchenware properly keeps your cookware, tools, and appliances ready for their next meal. By cleaning thoroughly, packing with care, and organizing by use, everything should be in top shape and easy to grab when you need it.
