How to Store Laundry Supplies

Nov 3, 2025 / Public Storage

To store laundry supplies properly, start by sealing all containers tightly and keeping everything organized by type. Laundry items last longer and stay easy to find when packed neatly in clean bins. Whether you’re preparing for a move or freeing up space in your laundry room, a little organization makes every wash day smoother.

Sort and Seal

Group supplies into categories — detergents, stain removers, dryer sheets, and tools like clothespins or ironing accessories. Check that every bottle or box is tightly sealed to prevent leaks. Wipe away residue from lids and measure caps before storing. Avoid placing liquid products directly on the floor, even inside your storage unit.

Pack in Bins

Choose sturdy plastic bins with snap-on lids. Line the bottom with an old towel or absorbent pad in case of small leaks. Smaller items such as mesh laundry bags, fabric fresheners, or sewing kits can go in smaller boxes within the bin. Label each container clearly so you can restock easily later.

Keep the Environment Right

Laundry supplies store best in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. Heat and humidity can cause detergents or softeners to thicken or separate. If you live in a region with temperature swings, consider a climate-controlled Public Storage unit to help preserve your products.

Organize in Your Unit

Stack bins neatly on shelves, placing heavier bottles at the bottom and lighter boxes above. Create a dedicated laundry section in your unit so all related supplies stay together. If you’re also storing linens or towels, group them in nearby bins for convenience.

Refresh and Replace

Check supplies occasionally, especially if they’ve been stored for several months. Replace any expired products, and safely dispose of containers that have leaked or become brittle.

Laundry supplies are easy to manage when everything is sealed, sorted, and labeled. A little organization saves time when you need to restock or move. Reserving a self-storage unit helps you declutter utility spaces and keep your laundry gear in reserve until it’s needed again.

Features and amenities vary by location, facility, and unit. “Climate-controlled” and related terms (such as air-conditioned, heated, or humidistat-equipped) describe storage spaces designed to help maintain more consistent temperature or humidity levels compared to non-climate-controlled units. Public Storage does not guarantee temperature or humidity ranges. Availability, features, and unit types may differ by location, facility, and unit. Please confirm with your facility whether specific climate-controlled features are available on units at that location.
