How to Store Grills and Outdoor Cooking Equipment
Oct 2, 2025 / Public Storage
Grilling season is a highlight of summer, but once the weather cools down, your grill and outdoor cooking gear can take up a lot of space. A storage unit is a smart solution for keeping everything out of the way until you’re ready to fire it up again. If you’re storing a grill, remember: propane tanks and other fuels cannot be stored in a Public Storage unit.
Clean Before You Store
Start by giving your grill and accessories a thorough cleaning. Remove any leftover charcoal, scrub grates with a grill brush, and wipe down surfaces. Leftover grease or food particles can attract pests and cause unpleasant odors if not removed.
Disassemble Removable Parts
Take off grates, drip pans, and side trays, then pack them separately. Store small parts in a labeled box or bag so they’re easy to reassemble later. Keeping pieces separated prevents damage and saves space.
Protect Surfaces
Wrap metal components in moving blankets or use a fitted grill cover to protect against scratches and dust. For extra protection, place cardboard or a tarp under the grill inside your storage unit to catch any residue.
Store Accessories Together
Keep barbecue tools, aprons, oven mitts, and other accessories in a labeled plastic bin. This way, everything is in one place and ready for your next cookout.
Choose the Right Storage Unit
A 5×5 or 5×10 storage unit is often large enough for a standard grill and accessories. If you have patio furniture or other outdoor items to store alongside it, consider sizing up for extra room.
The Bottom Line
With a little prep, storing your grill and outdoor cooking equipment is simple. Clean, disassemble, and cover your gear before moving it into a storage unit, and you’ll be ready for grilling season the moment warm weather returns.
(Public Storage rental agreements prohibit storing property with a total value over $5,000 per unit. Propane tanks and other fuels are not permitted in storage units.)
