How to Store a Ping-Pong Table

Nov 4, 2025 / Public Storage

To store a ping-pong table properly, start by cleaning, folding, and covering it before placing it in a dry, climate-controlled environment. Table tennis tables are large but delicate; proper care prevents warping, scratching, and net damage, ensuring it’s ready for your next match.

Step 1: Clean the Table Surface

Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe down the playing surface. Avoid harsh cleaners that can dull the finish. For stubborn marks, mix mild soap with water and wipe gently, then dry thoroughly with a microfiber towel. Dust off the net and posts, and remove them for separate storage.

Step 2: Clean and Inspect the Frame

Check the underside and metal legs for dirt or rust. Tighten loose screws and joints. Apply a silicone-based lubricant to moving parts to ensure smooth folding and unfolding. Avoid oils that can attract dust or leave residue.

Step 3: Fold and Secure

If your ping-pong table folds, lift each side slowly and lock it securely in its upright position. Ensure safety latches engage properly so the table won’t collapse. Keep fingers clear of hinges during folding. For non-folding tables, disassemble the legs if possible and label each piece for reassembly later.

Step 4: Protect the Surface

Cover the table with a fitted table cover or a clean sheet to prevent dust buildup. Avoid plastic wrapping, which can trap humidity and cause the surface to bubble or warp.

Step 5: Choose a Stable Environment

Temperature fluctuations can distort the tabletop’s surface. A climate-controlled Public Storage unit maintains steady humidity and temperature, protecting wood or composite materials. Keep the table away from vents, doors, or windows that expose it to sunlight or drafts.

Step 6: Store Upright and Supported

Stand the folded table vertically against a wall with padding at the contact points. If you have a foldable model on wheels, lock the casters so it doesn’t roll. For disassembled tables, stack panels vertically with cardboard or foam sheets between them.

Step 7: Keep Accessories Together

Store paddles, balls, and nets in a small labeled container. Clean paddles with a damp sponge, allow them to dry, and keep them in a zip-top bag to protect the rubber surface. Store balls in a sealed container to prevent cracking.

Step 8: Keep Off the Floor

Set the table on a pallet or rubber mat rather than directly on concrete to improve airflow and reduce moisture exposure.

Step 9: Regular Check-Ups

Inspect the table periodically for signs of warping or rust. Rotate its position slightly if it’s been standing for a long time to distribute weight evenly. Clean the surface again before your next game.

Step 10: Preparing for Use

When you’re ready to play, unlock the folding mechanism carefully. Wipe down the surface and frame, reattach the net, and test for level balance. Replace any missing hardware before setting up fully.

With regular care and stable conditions, a ping-pong table can stay game-ready for years.

Features and amenities vary by location, facility, and unit. “Climate-controlled” and related terms (such as air-conditioned, heated, or humidistat-equipped) describe storage spaces designed to help maintain more consistent temperature or humidity levels compared to non-climate-controlled units. Public Storage does not guarantee temperature or humidity ranges. Availability, features, and unit types may differ by location, facility, and unit. Please confirm with your facility whether specific climate-controlled features are available on units at that location.
