Fall Storage Checklist: Prepping for Cooler Months
Sep 25, 2025 / Public Storage
There’s something magical about that crisp shift in the autumn air. That is, until you realize the patio cushions are still outside and your garage looks like summer exploded. Fall is the perfect time to tidy up your space, pack away what you don’t need, and get cozy for the cooler months ahead. Whether you’re a seasoned organizer or a last-minute stasher, this checklist will help you prep for cooler months.
1. Swap Out Seasonal Gear
Start with the obvious: beach chairs, pool floats, picnic baskets, summer sports equipment. Give them a quick clean and let them dry completely before you pack them away. Stash them in clear bins or labeled totes so next summer feels like opening a perfectly curated time capsule.
Pro tip: Roll up outdoor rugs and stash them in a dry spot so they last longer.
2. Tidy the Closet Rotation
Now’s the time to revamp those closets. Pack away the tank tops, shorts, and sandals. Bring forward the boots, jackets, and cozier layers.
You don’t need to overdo it here, just store the items you know you won’t reach for until next year. Under-bed containers or breathable garment bags are your friends. If you go plastic, toss in some cedar blocks to keep things smelling fresh and bug-free. Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk need air to maintain shape and texture. Use vacuum bags sparingly and only for bulkier items that can handle compression, like beach towels.
3. Clean & Store Summer Linens
If you use lighter bedding or throw blankets over the warmer months, give them a good wash, fold them neatly, and store them in a dry container. Keep a few extras in reserve since you never know when you’ll need an extra blanket for a chilly night.
4. Declutter the Garage or Shed
This is where things can get… a little chaotic. Fall is a smart time to tidy up tools, stash away gardening supplies, and toss anything broken or unused. Create categoris: tools, outdoor toys, gardening supplies, etc. Then group, label, and stack accordingly. You’ll thank yourself when spring rolls around and you can actually find your trowel.
5. Revamp Your Entryway for the Cold
Your entryway is about to become boot central. Make space by storing the flip-flops and sun hats. Set up a boot tray, bring out the heavier coats, and reserve a basket for scarves and gloves. Consider adding a small bench or hooks for quick grab-and-go access.
Getting organized doesn’t have to feel like a seasonal chore. Think of it as a cozy reset. You’re not just packing things away, you’re making space for hot drinks, layered looks, and everything pumpkin-flavored. So go on—spruce up, stash what you don’t need, and enjoy the calm before the holiday buzz.
