Public Storage Hours and Office Policies Explained
Oct 23, 2025 / Public Storage
Whether you’re renting your first storage unit from Public Storage, or you’ve been rolling up those orange doors for years, it’s always a good time to get to know us better. From when you can visit your unit to hassle-free reservations and payments, here’s your guide to Public Storage hours and policies—clear, practical, and easy to follow.
Facility Hours & Office/Gate Access
Most Public Storage locations let you access your unit between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Office hours (for talking to staff, handling paperwork, getting help with lock, or billing issues) may differ by location. You’ll need to check the specific facility’s posted hours on PublicStorage.com or via the Public Storage app.
Note: the facility gates lock at closing times—if you get in before closing, you may not be able to exit after those hours, so be sure to give yourself enough time to be ready to leave.
Reserving a Unit
You can reserve a unit for free, with no obligation. Make a reservation online or over the phone to lock in the price and have the unit ready. Online pricing discounts may apply if you’re booking online. You can also change your reservation (date, size, or location) before move-in.
Accessing Your Storage Unit
Once you finish your rental paperwork (online or in person), you’ll get information (email/text) about how to access your unit, including gate codes or app access. Every entry usually requires using a code.. If there are exit codes or special policies, they are specific to your location. If you want someone else to access your storage unit, you can fill out an authorization form through the app, online through your Public Storage account, or in person at the facility office. This person must bring a valid photo ID when visiting the unit and may be required to enter your gate code to get in.
Cancelling a Reservation or Moving Out
You’re allowed to cancel a reservation at any time (before you actually move in) if your plans change. When moving out, you’ll want to notify Public Storage of your move-out date. Schedule at least 7 days in advance via the app, your online account, over the phone, or in person. Before you leave, empty the unit, remove your lock, clean up any mess, and inform the facility manager as they may inspect your unit to close your account.
Payments & Billing
Paying your Public Storage bill? Easy. You’ve got a few different ways to take care of it:
Online payments: Log into your account at publicstorage.com or use our mobile app. Set up one-time payments or auto-pay, so you don’t have to think about it every month.
Pay by phone: You can call 1-866-444-4747 to make a payment (for a small fee).
In person: Visit a facility to pay in person at the office or, where available, at a kiosk.
Billing cycle details
Rent is due monthly on the same day you signed your lease—no pro-rated days after that first month. Public Storage doesn’t currently offer weekly or bi-weekly payment plans—monthly only. Late fees typically kick in if payment is missed, depending on your state’s rules. (Check your rental agreement for your facility’s exact grace period.) Need to update your card or billing info? You can do that straight from your online account.
Note: If you move out mid-month, there are no refunds for unused days. So, if you’re planning to move out, aim for just before your billing date to get the most from your last month.
Other Key Policies
Age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old and present a valid government-issued ID.
Prohibited items: Public Storage prohibits storing unsafe, hazardous, illegal, perishable, or living things in the units.
Use of space: Using the storage space for living in or running a business (as an office or address) is not allowed.
Insurance: You’ll need to have insurance for your stored items. The Orange Door Storage Insurance Program is an exclusive program for Public Storage customers, or you might use your own renters/homeowners policy if it covers stored goods.
Now that you know the ins and outs of Public Storage, you can get back to enjoying what we do best: helping you cut the clutter and get organized for good.
