I paid for a full month of storage at the Hayward Public Storage location and the manager made the entire process of moving my belongings unnecessarily difficult even though I was fully paid. She threatened to lock me out of my unit and then restricted my 24 hour access which I had already paid for. This forced me to rush to find a new storage unit and created delays and stress that were completely avoidable. I was not behind on payments and I was not violating any contract terms. She simply decided to restrict my access and make it harder for me to remove my belongings. Customer service then bounced me back to the same manager who refused to help and claimed she could not do anything. I was told I had to call within three days to request a refund which is not in the contract and was never communicated to me. This appears to be an excuse to avoid processing a refund for the unused portion of the month that I paid for but did not receive. I am requesting a refund for the unused days and documentation of any charges they claim justify withholding it. The manager’s behavior was unprofessional, retaliatory, and created unnecessary obstacles for me while I was attempting to move my belongings. I am filing this complaint because I was denied access I paid for, threatened with lockout, and given false information about refund policies. I want this resolved through corporate oversight because the local manager refused to address the issue.

Horrible experience very misleading. Literally was there a little over a week and moved out after being locked inside of the facility after the gate was manually locked on purpose by the employee. Mind you I paid extra for 24 hour access as I work through the wee hours. They terminated my lease after I requested an immediate move out. This situation has been escalated after Cynthia chose to harass me on multiple occasions and the last straw was being locked into the facility.

But for anyone that is looking for a clean and well maintained storage unit in Hayward, Union City and other Close by Cities, THIS IS WHERE TO GO.
I must admit too, multiple times the need of a restroom occurred and when you gotta go you gotta go but there is always that thought of "how clean is it" that crosses most of our minds and let me say, you be surprised its cleaner than majority of what I've seen in Public places like Airports, Parks, Other Storage, Etc., if you have standards before using a restroom there is only one thing I can say... after you use it you will realize..that the Staff of this Public Storage has a HIGH LEVEL OF STANADARDS for ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS,
So to the STAFF that I know (Cynthia and Lisa)...PLEASE CONTINUE TO
Keep up with the GREAT UP KEEP OF THE WHOLE FACILITY as you Ladies do Daily...

Cynth1ia is wonderful and very professional and it my pleasure doing business with your establishment.
I moved my belongings into this storage facility in September 2025 after closing my business of 10 years. That alone was devastating. I chose this location because the online rate was $184 — already a stretch for me while working two jobs and trying to stabilize financially.
In January 2026, with almost no notice, they increased my rent by $92 — bringing it to $276. There was no limited promotion disclosed, no explanation, and no issue with my account. I’ve paid on time every month.
Because of this sudden increase, I now cannot afford the unit and will likely have to sell everything I placed there — items I stored during one of the hardest transitions of my life.
After I left a 1-star review, they offered a $23 “discount” for only three months. That does not fix the issue. It feels insulting.
If you rent here, understand that your rate can increase significantly at any time, regardless of payment history. If you need stability or are already financially stretched, reconsider before signing.
What they did was opportunistic and incredibly disappointing.

Very accommodating excellent customer service
They replaced the lock on our locker without telling us, despite all bills being up to date without any late payments.
When going to the office during office hours today to ask about the new keys to access our locker, the lights were on but nobody was there. I even saw other pissed customers there wondering what's going on, then leaving.
EDIT: We found out that they replaced the lock on our locker because there was a break-in a few month ago and some items got stolen. They quietly replaced the lock without letting us know about the break-in. We found out about it when trying to open our storage unit, and our keys not working.
Our unit got broken into. We only found out when our key didn't work. So, somehow someone got into the unit, removed our lock, took our stuff and then put a new lock on it. Management was completely unhelpful and said they knew nothing about it. Maybe it was an inside job.

This public storage location, 2525, Whipple road. There is never hardly ever anyone in the office. They don't have a consistent time of opening, they don't have enough employees to keep someone at the front desk very unprofessional, he spoke with a older woman, white gentleman, and he informed me that he was here last week and was rob, he stated He informed the office and they hadn't no video in the area where it happened. Very scary, but I called the number to this location yesterday, and they stated that they would be open at 9:30. I've been here since 9:20 am and there's still no one here, and it is now 10:09am and they gave me a storage unit that some disgusting adult did a number 2.
About 4 to 5 feet away from the door and no one has cleaned it up. As of Yet very unprofessional.

Ran by terrible management/employees, strict rules, cockroaches and ants all throughout the 2nd floor and inside my unit along with my personal belongings now. Can not even access your property 24 hours a day. Didn't even last 2 weeks I had to get out for my own good. I Don't recommend public storage unless you're in Arizona because you have more freedom

Office is always closed. Can't get hold of anyone working here. The phone number posted sends you only do a generic hotline but no property manager answers or calls you back within reasonable time, meaning standing outside a locked office during business hours.

I appreciate how Cynthia the Front Desk Service at the location was so helpful and she explained all in detail how to do about if you had lost your spare keys and went along and told me how to just fill out a form! She also told me to how to gain access a quicker way by downloading the App to freehand the code box at the gate and just use your app and press Access to open the gate automatically, so that was a Great Update☆☆☆☆☆

Cynthia who works in the front desk/office is very professional and help! I have never been dissatisfied to any service(s) provided. This location is the best and most cleanest place I’ve ever rented, and not to mention this location has climate control !! I have been renting storage space from this location for a long time and I refuse to go elsewhere.
Property manager Cynthia is always kind and courteous. It’s a pleasure dealing with such people. I rented a few spaces more today and I have been at this location for several years.
