About Mauldin

Mauldin is a rapidly-growing city just south of the center of Greenville County, tucked into the northwestern corner of South Carolina. Between 1990 and 2010 alone, the city doubled in size, drawing many people with its friendly sense of community, active arts and culture scene, scenic natural setting and useful amenities.

The History of Mauldin

The city's official history began in 1784 when Benjamin Griffith received a grant for 100 acres in the area now known as Mauldin. In 1868, Willis William Butler purchased a home at Reedy River Road and Laurens Road, the town's only crossroads at that time. At that point, the area became known as Butler's Crossroads and Butler's Corners.

In 1886, the town began growing with the Mauldin Train Depot construction project. Named after Lt. Gov. W. L. Mauldin, the railroad helped bring new people and businesses to the community. In 1890, Mauldin received its first charter. While the town reincorporated and elected its first mayor on Feb. 14, 1910, the charter was revoked in 1932 as a result of extreme hardships during the Great Depression. However, on May 28, 1957, the town was once again reincorporated, and in 1969, it officially became a city.
