About Moore

Moore is a family-centered city in central Oklahoma, located between the neighboring cities of Oklahoma City and Norman. Even though Moore is just a midsize city compared to many other American communities, it’s actually one of the largest in the rural state of Oklahoma. The History of Moore

According to local history, Moore’s founding can be traced back to a man named Al Moore, an employee of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. During the Land Run of 1889, he worked as a train conductor and made his home in a boxcar at the railway camp.

However, his unusual home often made it difficult for him to receive his mail, and he grew frustrated with the situation. He decided to paint his last name on a piece of wood and nail it to the boxcar, to avoid any further confusion. When the small settlement was appointed a postmaster, the name was applied to the entire community. In 1893, the town incorporated and officially chose to keep the name of Moore.
