Neptune Township History and Neighborhoods

Neptune Township was established in 1879, but its full story is told through the history of its longstanding neighborhoods. As far back as the Revolutionary War, settlers put down roots in West Neptune, the oldest section. Just after the Civil War, a seashore camping retreat in Ocean Grove was established by Rev. William Osburn.

Ocean Grove Tent Community still stands, as do Victorians along the tree-lined streets. Shark River Hills’ expansive water views began drawing city dwellers looking for a place to raise families in the early 1920s, just as it does today. Get to know Mid-Town, Bradley Park, the Gables, and Seaview Island as you settle into Neptune Township.

Neptune Township is home to Jersey Shore Medical Center, a research and teaching hospital, as well as the Regional Trauma Center for Central Jersey. Things to do in Neptune Township

Neptune Township offers an array of all-ages, four-season recreation. Shark River Park is for fishing, hiking, ice skating, cross-country skiing, shuffleboard, and horseshoe pitching. Swimming, fishing, crabbing, boating, and birding are favored pastimes at Shark River.

Take your pick of nearby beaches from Asbury Park to South End, Bradley, and Avon to establish your favorite. A plethora of seafood restaurants await. The Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove has been a welcome place for concerts and sermons since 1894. People-watch the Asbury Park Boardwalk, or take in the sunset from Bradley Beach’s low-key boardwalk.

Neptune Township Transportation

Neptune Township has earned the nickname Crossroads of the Jersey Shore, thanks to major arteries such as Garden State Parkway’s exits 100 and 102, and State Highways 18, 33, 35, 66, and 71 inside or just outside its borders. New Jersey Transit trains stop at Bradley Beach/Neptune Station, providing access to Newark and New York City. NJ Transit also operates local bus lines as well as service to Philadelphia.

Neptune Township Schools

Neptune Township School District operates its top-notch public schools, striving for excellence from pre-K through high school for all learners. Brookdale Community College has a regional location in Neptune adjacent to Neptune High School.
