Cheverly is a small, urban town located just 7 miles from Washington, D.C. and 30 miles from Baltimore. The History of Cheverly
Cheverly got its start as a planned subdivision in the early 1900s, originally planned as a 93-acre community that was to be called Cheverly Gardens. Robert Marshall purchased the land in 1918, putting the plans into action and becoming the first resident of the community. Between 1921 and 1925, more than 30 homes were constructed, most of them mail-order homes from the Sears & Roebuck catalog.
In 1931, Cheverly was officially incorporated in an effort to improve public services and roads. As these changes were made, the local population gradually increased. A variety of home styles were constructed through the 1960s, including Cape Cod, ranch and split-level homes. In the late 1970s, the town constructed a community center, a park facility and a town hall.
