Moving to Methuen
Methuen is a growing city in Massachusetts' Essex County, about 30 miles from the city of Boston. Because of its relatively low population density, Methuen has the feel of a spacious, suburban community as opposed to an urban city. Local landmarks include the city's historic district, Forest Lake and Methuen Memorial Music Hall.
The History of Methuen
The area now known as Methuen was originally used as hunting territory by the Penacook Indians and later settled in the 1680s by European settlers. The town was incorporated in 1725, and to this day it is the only city in the world with the name Methuen. Methuen has survived on many industries throughout the years, from linen weaving in the early days to ironworking and more. The earliest public building in the city was the pound, an enclosure made of stones that was about 40 square feet, built to house stray animals.
Methuen is close to a number of larger towns, such as Lawrence, which is only 2 miles away, and Boston, which is about 30 miles away. Even though Methuen is large enough to offer the amenities and facilities you need, it's convenient to be so close to other large cities.
Beneficial facilities throughout the city include several hospitals, nursing homes and health care centers, as well as, several colleges and universities within a small radius of Methuen, which makes it easy to pursue higher education. The city also has plenty of everyday amenities like grocery stores, coffee shops and convenience stores.
Forest Lake offers a scenic retreat from the city, providing recreational activities that include fishing, swimming and canoeing. Spanning over 55 acres, it's bordered by the Methuen town forest.
Methuen Public Schools District manages the city's grammar schools, its high school and an adult education facility. There are also a handful of private schools in Methuen, many of which are affiliated with the Catholic church. St. Ann's Home and School is a unique educational facility that provides both day classes and residential treatment for students with behavioral, educational and emotional challenges.
