While there is some evidence that humans have been living in the Ventura area for thousands of years, the current community wasn't started until 1782, when Father Junipero Serra built a missionary there. Father Serra named it after Saint Bonaventure. It later received the nickname Ventura. Much of the Mission lands were distributed among settles after the 1812 Wrightwood earthquake.
Ventura was officially incorporated in 1866. In 1873, it became the county seat after Ventura County was split from Santa Barbara County. The town later experienced rapid growth when miners discovered oil. Suburban areas also began to grow as the city distributed farmland to developers in the 1910s.
Is Ventura on your list of potential places to move to? If so, then you are in good company. The city's population increased by over 13 percent between 1990 and 2016, adding more than 12,000 people to the number of residents.
It's easy to understand why so many people want to live in this quiet, attractive city with a low crime rate and year-round pleasant climate. There are, however, some disadvantages to living in Ventura. Many people who live there face long commute times. Its growing population has also contributed to sprawl, which can make it difficult to travel within the city and between communities.
