About West Allis
West Allis is a midsize city in southeastern Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee that's located just a few miles from the larger city. It's home to a mix of families, young couples, single professionals and retirees, all of whom enjoy the proximity to big-city amenities including entertainment, shopping and dining.
The History of West Allis
The area where West Allis is now located was first settled by Francois Drake Weld in 1836. During this time, pioneers began arriving in Wisconsin and the surrounding area to establish new homes, villages and towns. By 1880, the Chicago-Northwest Railroad started service through the area, helping bring business and new residents to the town. Machinery production plants were built, fueling the area's industrialization and the growth of the local economy.
The largest of the production plants was owned by Edward P. Allis Co. In 1902, the city organized and adopted the name of West Allis in 1902, officially earning its charter in 1906.
West Allis and the surrounding area offer green spaces, plentiful amenities and friendly people. Many people relocate to the city to enjoy a quiet, suburban lifestyle that still provides easy access to Milwaukee. There's plenty to do in West Allis, ranging from the annual Wisconsin State Fair to the bi-weekly farmers market, which dates back to 1919.
