How to Choose a Storage Space

PDF TIP SHEET

For most people, visualizing a 5' x 10' space can be difficult, which makes choosing the right size storage unit a guessing game. That's why Frank from Public Storage is here to help you learn how to choose the right size storage space for you.

Step 1 - Gather Items for Storage

The first thing you want to do is gather everything that you might want to put into storage. If items need to be packed, put them into boxes. We know sometimes it can be tempting to just toss clothes into a giant garbage bag, but those tear easily and lack ventilation, which can cause mildew - a major faux pas. If you don't have boxes, you can always swing by Public Storage or order some online.

Step 2 - Grab Tape and a Tape Measure

Be sure to use tape that can be removed easily and won't leave any residue on your floor. The more colorful the tape the better - you're going to want to be able to see the tape on the ground.

Step 3 - Mark Out Unit Size with Tape

Depending on how much stuff you have, you can start with a 5' x 10', 10' x 10', 10' x 20' size space. Use the tape measure and tape to mark out the space you think you need on the ground. This will help you to really visualize exactly what we mean when we say, for example 5' x 10.'

Public Storage teaches you how to choose a storage unit. Public Storage walks you through the different self-storage unit sizes available.

Step 4 - Move All Items Into the Taped Area

Now is where you start moving everything you plan on storing into the taped area. Try to pack the taped space like you would an actual storage unit. If you're not sure how to pack a storage unit, check out this helpful how-to video. We'll teach you all the tricks.

Step 5 - Take 8' Ceilings Into Account

Don't forget, most self-storage unit ceilings are 8' high, so you can stack items - just not too high.

Step 6 - Re-measure If Necessary

If you begin to realize that a certain size space is too small or way too big, don't worry, you can always re-measure out a different size and try again. You'll know you found the right size when you can get all of your items into the space with a little extra room around the edges. Click here for a full list of our self-storage unit sizes.

Step 7 - Make a Reservation

Once you know exactly how much space you need, find that storage unit size near you and lock in a reservation for free here.

Now you're pretty much a storage guru. So go ahead, pack up all of your stuff and get moving, this is going to be a breeze.
