Moving to Pickerington
Pickerington is a small city in central Ohio, considered a suburb of the city of Columbus. It's known as the Violet Capital of Ohio, so named for its abundance of wild violets. The city is also home to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which draws a steady flow of visitors to the area.
The History of Pickerington
In its earliest days, the land where Pickerington now stands was home to several Native American tribes, including the Shawnee and the Mingo. The 1795 Treaty of Greenville relocated the Native Americans to the nearby community of Sandusky. Soon after, Fairfield County was organized and established as part of the Northwest Territory.
Within the county, Violet Township was incorporated in 1808. A Virginia man purchased land in the township for his children, who constructed their log homes on Sycamore Creek. His daughter, Ann, was married to Abraham Pickering. He decided to work on establishing a town in the area, purchasing extra land from his father-in-law and hiring surveyors. Three lots were saved for a local school, a church and a cemetery, and the rest were sold to settlers.
In 1815, Pickering chose the name Jacksonville for his small town, in honor of General Andrew Jackson. The name stuck until 1827, when locals changed the name to Pickerington to honor their founder.
