Mason is a bustling city in southwestern Ohio, located less than 25 miles from the major city of Cincinnati. The land where Mason is now located was purchased by Revolutionary War veteran William Mason in 1803. He paid just $1,700 at a local auction for the 640 acres where the present-day downtown now stands, platting 16 individual lots and choosing the name Palmira. After his death, 40 additional lots on the west, north and south sides of his development were platted.
Upon recording, the name was misspelled as Palmyra, and it was discovered that another Ohio town had claimed that name. In honor of its founder, the town's name was changed to Mason.
