About Miller Place
Miller Place is a small coastal town in New York that has become a popular community for families, thanks to a strong education system, an ample arts and culture scene and a low crime rate. Many Miller Place locals commute outside of the community for work, including traveling to workplaces throughout Long Island and even as far as New York City. The hamlet has a long history that dates back to the 17th century, and many markers of its past are still standing today.
Before European settlers ever arrived, the land where Miller Place is now located was inhabited by the native Setalcott tribe. In 1664, settlers arrived and purchased the land, which also included the future site of Mount Sinai, New York. Captain John Scott constructed the area's first known home, naming it "Braebourne." Among the earliest settlers of the area were the Miller family, the people for whom the community was named.
In the late 19th century, Miller Place became a vacation spot that was very popular in the summer months. Beachside bungalows and cabins dotted the shoreline, and a large Girl Scouts camp was open until the 1980s. Aside from tourism, much of the economy of Miller's Place was focused on agriculture. However, the suburban movement that changed many small towns across America also affected Miller's Place, helping it transition into a densely-population suburban community.
