Fraser developed as a crossroads community, which became a village around 1851. It was named after Alexander J. Frazer, who purchased land during a visit to the area in 1858. It was officially recognized as a village in 1894 before being officially reincorporated as a city in 1956. Fraser's rich history is celebrated at the Fraser Historic Museum.
