Parkville is a midsize community in east-central Maryland, located along the coastline of the Chesapeake Bay. Part of the Baltimore-Towson metropolitan area and Baltimore County, Parkville lies approximately 7 miles southwest of downtown Baltimore and 40 miles northeast of Washington, D.C.
The History of Parkville
Simon Jonas Martenet, a surveyor from Baltimore, purchased the land where Parkville now sits in 1874. He then sold plots as residential sites, advertising the area as "one of the healthiest and pleasantest locations near Baltimore." The community was named Parkville after a plot of land between present-day Oak and Chestnut Avenues that Mr. Martenet donated to the public on the condition that it always remain a park. His wishes have been honored to this day.
Parkville's busiest street, Harford Road, was originally a Native American trail. During colonial times, it served as a thoroughfare for the southern and northern colonies, and in 1773, the first stagecoach traveled along the road on its journey from Philadelphia to Baltimore.
Parkville has a number of advantages, including its strong economy, convenient location and attractive suburban areas. It may be a modern city, but landmarks like the Parkville Park, the Hiss House, the Krause Memorial Limestone Kiln and the Cub Hill House recall the community's historical roots. Local events like the Stanstock Music Festival and the Czech and Slovak Heritage Festival make this suburban community an enjoyable place to live, and provide the opportunity to get to know your neighbors and learn about the local culture.
The diversity of Parkville's economy is one of the keys to the city's success. Sales, office and administrative support is the largest sector in Parkville, employing a large population of the local population. There are also a significant number of production, transportation, construction, extraction, maintenance and repair jobs to consider.
The schools of Parkville belong to the Baltimore County Public Schools district. You also have several private school options in the surrounding area, including parochial, early childhood and special education campuses.
