Moving to Clinton
Clinton is a midsize community in Prince George's County, Maryland. It's home to a population that has been growing rapidly in recent decades, including many families and married couples. At less than 15 miles from Washington, D.C., Clinton offers a quiet suburban retreat with easy access to the nation's capital and all of its amenities.
The History of Clinton
The community now known as Clinton was first founded in the 1770s and originally named Surratt's Villa. Just a small crossroads with a handful of buildings, it eventually came to be known as Surrattsville in the 1800s. The settlement was named for its main building, which was owned by widow Mary Surratt.
Mary Surratt holds a place of notoriety in the town's history for her role in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth, who was convicted of the assassination, made a stop at the Surrattsville tavern just a few hours after the crime. He collected supplies and additional weapons at the tavern, which had allegedly been provided by Mary Surratt. She was convicted of aiding Booth, and the town was renamed Robeysville to avoid association with the widow. In 1879, it was again renamed, this time receiving its present-day name of Clinton.
