Moving to Cheverly
Cheverly is a small, urban town located just 7 miles from Washington, D.C. and 30 miles from Baltimore. The community has begun to expand again after a short stall in population growth, attracting new residents with its convenient location, friendly locals, and excellent parks and recreation program.
The History of Cheverly
Cheverly got its start as a planned subdivision in the early 1900s, originally planned as a 93-acre community that was to be called Cheverly Gardens. Robert Marshall purchased the land in 1918, putting the plans into action and becoming the first resident of the community. Between 1921 and 1925, more than 30 homes were constructed, most of them mail-order homes from the Sears & Roebuck catalog.
In 1931, Cheverly was officially incorporated in an effort to improve public services and roads. As these changes were made, the local population gradually increased. A variety of home styles were constructed through the 1960s, including Cape Cod, ranch and split-level homes. In the late 1970s, the town constructed a community center, a park facility and a town hall.
Although Cheverly is very small geographically, you'll find a large number of parks and recreational facilities in the area. Many families take advantage of the public green space and recreational programs, and you'll find that the local parks and recreation department offers something for everyone.
The town's local parks include Bellamy Park, Magruder Spring Park, Cheverly-East Neighborhood Park and Town Park. Among the amenities provided by these and other parks are children's playgrounds, sports fields, walking paths, exercise trails and picnic areas.
Prince George's County Public Schools oversees the public schools of Cheverly. The district offers many special programs, including advanced placement, career and technology education, special education and language immersion.
Resources for Moving to Cheverly

Utilities: PEPCO is the town's primary energy provider, while the town utilities department manages water and sewer services.
Garbage and Recycling: Trash is collected on a regular basis, including yard waste (picked up every Monday). The town also provides scheduled collection for bulky items.
Transportation: Cheverly is included in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's transportation network.
Although the median home price in Cheverly is considerably higher than the national average, it's still fairly reasonable considering the town's close proximity to Washington, D.C. Because the town is so small, its housing market does not have the range of options you might find in larger cities. However, there's still enough variety to provide you with choices in terms of price, style and size.
