Moving to Streamwood
Streamwood is a large village in the Chicago metropolitan area, located about 29 miles west of downtown Chicago. It's one of three communities in the area that make up the "Tri Village," accompanied by Hanover Park and Bartlett. Streamwood houses a diverse, growing population, with a large percentage of young families calling the village home.
The History of Streamwood
Originally known as the Hanover Township of Hoosier Grove, the Streamwood community was home to dairy farmers for close to 80 years. Only about 800 people lived in the area in 1950, scattered across many rural farms. However, after World War II, the community was poised to undergo major changes.
Veterans and their families were seeking quiet, suburban lifestyles in planned subdivisions across the country, including in the state of Illinois. The GI Bill funded many of these housing developments, accounting for more than 11 million new homes in the U.S. The high demand created a near-frenzy in many housing markets, fueling a major boom in construction.
In 1956, 21 pre-assembled homes built by L & H Builders in Indiana arrived in the area that would become Streamwood. Local contractors put the homes on their foundations within a couple of weeks, and the community took off from there. By 1957, the village of Streamwood was officially incorporated, experiencing significant growth within its first several years.
The Woodland Heights School opened in 1958, and the Streamwood Shopping Center was established in 1962. Both these developments helped support Streamwood's growing population. An additional mall, the Westview Shopping Center, offered further retail choices when it opened its doors in 1989.
Streamwood is a growing village that provides a number of beneficial amenities. The village's parks districts encourage locals to stay active with several recreation centers and public parks. Sunnyhill Park is one of the best appointed and most popular, with an interactive water pad, a skatepark, two playgrounds, three gazebos, a Frisbee course and tennis courts. Families can also take advantage of hundreds of recreational programs, ranging from youth and adults sports to arts and culture.
Streamwood has a diverse economy, with major businesses and organizations including Carqueville Graphics, Streamwood Behavioral Center and the Village of Streamwood, as well as retailers including Super Target, Walmart and Sam's Club. These companies provide thousands of jobs for locals. In addition to national retailers, Streamwood also has many family-owned stores. The "Shop Streamwood" initiative encourages residents and visitors to keep their spending money within the local community, strengthening and diversifying the economy.
School District U-46 serves the educational needs of several communities in Cook, Kane and DuPage counties, including Streamwood. You'll find a few private school options in Streamwood, including Northwest Academy, a day school for students with special needs.
