Moving to Ewa Beach
About Ewa Beach
Ewa Beach is a very small Hawaiian community on the island of Oahu, about 20 miles west of Honolulu. Most residents of Honolulu and Hawaii call it simply "Ewa," a shortened version of its name that means "crooked" in the Hawaiian language.
According to Hawaiian myth, two gods threw a stone to determine the area's boundaries, but their throw missed the target. When they had to search extensively to find it, they called the area "Ewa" as a nod to their badly-aimed throw.
Ewa has a small downtown area and limited commercial areas and services, because most services are in nearby Honolulu. However, it's rich in recreational opportunities, including its local beach and the Ewa Beach Golf Club. If you enjoy outdoor adventure, you can scuba dive or rent a charter boat and fish the Pacific waters. Ewa Beach Park is also a great place to surf cast.
You'll also be close to Hawaii's top attractions like the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor and Nanakuli Forest Reserve. Honolulu is less than an hour away, providing a number of amenities including shopping, dining and entertainment.
Living in Ewa Beach
The charming beach community has plenty to offer despite its small size. It lies right along the Pacific Ocean, and beach houses line the shoreline, which is part rock and part sandy beach. Most of Ewa is residential area, with upscale houses densely packed in neat, organized neighborhoods.
Ewa has a few well-known neighborhoods, but you'll generally find that homes fall into one of two categories: beach houses and land houses. Ewa Beach and Ewa Village inland are the two main designations. Most houses on Ewa Beach are very expensive, especially those right on the water, but homes in neighborhoods just blocks away are slightly more affordable.
Ewa Beach Schools
Schools in Ewa Beach are part of the Hawaii Public School District. You can also consider a few private school options, most of which are faith-based campuses.
