Moving to Montebello
Franciscan Missionaries were the first to settle in what is now Montebello, California. They built the San Gabriel Mission, which is one of the largest and most well-known missions in the state, and fell under Father Junipero Serra's direction. Montebello is known for its copious rainfall, which made the San Gabriel Mission less than viable for early missionaries. They abandoned the Montebello location in 1776 in favor of its last home in the San Gabriel Valley.
Later, Montebello served as a battleground against Mexican armies. The Battle of the Rio San Gabriel ended the physical conflict in 1847, and the iconic Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe has recently been restored in the heart of Montebello. It serves as a historical museum so that Montebello visitors and residents can learn and benefit from the historical context of the region.
Montebello took its first steps toward becoming an official city when Alessandro Repetto constructed his home in this area. When he passed away, his brother sold his land to a group of Los Angeles businessmen. They called the new town Montebello, which means "beautiful hills" in Italian, and established the Montebello Land and Water Company.
It wasn't until 1920, however, that Montebello was incorporated as a California city. The standard oil company found oil here, which transformed the area from an agricultural oasis into a booming oil town. Farm land still exists in Montebello, though it has become far more urban since the early 20th century.
Are you thinking about putting down roots in Montebello? If so, you'll enjoy meeting your new neighbors and establishing yourself in the local culture. Area Vibes calls the city "extremely livable," thanks in large part to its beautiful weather. Despite the aforementioned rainfall, you'll still see plenty of sunny skies in Montebello, and winters are so mild that you might never pull your heavy coat from storage.
While Montebello is close to Los Angeles and other larger cities, you'll never lack for amenities in town. Shopping destinations, quaint eateries, cozy coffee houses, and large fitness centers await your patronage. There are also five public parks in the city and four libraries. It's also the site of numerous community events and parades.
Low crime rates and a booming housing market make Montebello a safe and potentially lucrative place to call home. It's particularly low on violent crime, and real estate holds its value well. Of course, high home prices naturally leads to a high cost of living. Montebello is largely on par with the expenses associated with living in California, though it's considerably more expensive than other parts of the United States.
The unemployment rate here is lower than both the state and national averages, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a job. However, the per-capita income is a little low in the context of the cost of living, so you'll want to consider all of your options before packing your boxes and heading for this city.
The Montebello Unified School District serves this city's students and their families. The district has a heavy focus on students' pathways into the future, providing career guidance as well as preparatory materials to help students excel.
